I can't afford NJ car insurance, what should I do?
Nov 09, 2009 by twitchddragyn | Posted in Insurance & Registration
Q: I justified turned 25 and I never drove a car before because of the high car insurance rates and the fact that my parents turn thumbs down on to help me pay it. I have a job, but I'm also in college. I got my driver's permit this year, but no license yet. I got a quote on how much it would fetch me to drive if I get the license, and it came out to roughly 5-6 thousand dollars a year, stupidity! I don't plan to ever get a job that makes THAT type of money.
Is there anything I could do, or did my parents screw me by not letting me manoeuvre all these years? I have to either walk or beg a friend for rides anywhere -- Granted all my friends are 'funded' by their parents, of by all means.
Also apparently if I had tried to get insurance before I was 25 it would of been even more than what I'm being quoted. How can anyone afford it alone!? Maybe I should look into getting a motor scooter or a moped as an alternative of a car.
I asked a few insurance companies. The insurance in north NJ is high. They start almost everyone off at 6 grand and then cut that in half within the first 5 years if you don't have any driving problems.
I have a yen for my mom to put me on her insurance as main driver, but the car under her name. She will not do this since it will raise her insurance and she only pays 800/year now.
My friends my age that have been driving since 16 pay about 3000/year but started off around 8000 when they were 16. However their parents picked up the tab, and English, I don't know anyone my age that I socialize with that can afford their own insurance. All their parents still pay it. I don't think it's reasonable to drive in the formal of NJ if your parents aren't cooperative.
It is depressing! I don't know anyone my age who doesn't drive. I fork out almost all my time home because of it. Plus my friend's parents have been talking about my parents being cut-price/bad parents. Looks like I'll never drive. :( Sad!
A: If you can't furnish car insurance, I'm sorry, but the only answer is don't drive. Yes, I would call around or go online to get more quotes. That does sound elevated, but you are a new driver and, as such, a greater risk. I don't think that if your parents had let you drive any sooner it would have made that much of a character in the cost.
EDIT: When I was your age (sorry to use that line), I had a 7 year old son, was paying for my own car insurance, apartment, provisions, clothes, etc. At 25 you are an big grown adult and should be fending for yourself. Be lucky that you still live under your parents roof and don't have to pay for box and food. It's not your parents fault nor responsibility to pay for your insurance.
If you're still in school, obviously you need to look into a beat paying career. Sorry to be rough on you, but you need to be more self-sufficient at your age.
I merely answered a question where the person roller bladed to work. Maybe that would be an choice for you. There are other ways.

Who should I vote for in NJ primary - Ron Paul, Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton?
Feb 04, 2008 by Bryan | Posted in Elections
Q: Once again, I don't like any of my choices. I'm so fed up with Bush and his Iraq fixed idea that I can only consider Ron Paul among republicans (knowing full well he won't win). Then I could also hold my nose and preference for Hillary or Barack. Barack characterizes upper middle class familes such as mine as the 'Mephitic Rich' but never paid NJ car insurance rates! Hillar y is just plain scary.
Take - Advice sought!
A: Either Clinton or Obama.

I'm looking to change car insurance companies. I currently have GEICO in NJ and my rate is 733 for 6 months.

Q: I have no points and no accidents within 5 years hour. I have no surcharges. Is this a good rate for full coverage on a 1997 Ford Taurus? I know of people who only pay this amount for full coverage for a year. Why is my rate higher than there's?
A: You would be foremost served by a LOCAL independent agent. Typically, an independent will have a dozen or more companies to settle upon from to fit your individual needs.
Just look in your local phone book for the PIA or Big I (Trusted Pick) logos and you should find a professional agent there to help you. In NJ, you also have the NJAAA - New Jersey Auto Agents Union headed up by John Kerry Dyke. You might google them for leads to an agent in your section.
Good luck and I hope this helps!

can you get insurance in IL if the car is registered in NJ?
Jul 05, 2006 by ?uest | Posted in Insurance & Registration
Q: I have a car that is registered to my forefather in NJ but I'll be moving to IL. I'm the primary driver. It's a newer car so if I tried to just buy it off of him the interest rate would *skyrocket*. So, being the essential driver, and living in IL, would I be able to keep the car registered in NJ but get IL insurance? If not, any other options?
A: Insurance is mainly based on where the car is garaged. I have insured cars in IL in the past that were registered in other states and have not had a question.
