What is the process for handling a home owners insurance claim?

Q: We were only notified that one our houses, (we are trying to sell it) has just flooded from frozen pipes. I, fortuntely, have never had to rank an insurance claim ever. Do we call ins. first, or do we get estimates caused by the damage or do we just start repairing? What role does the ins band play?

A: I'll use that the water has been shut off to the house now (if not run and do it now!). You will really need to speak with your intermediary/agent as this really depends on the wording of your policy, but I'll try to cover all of the "what ifs". Has the forebears been vacant (i.e. previous occupant/tenant has moved all stuff out with no intention of returning) for more than 30 days? Your impair will not be covered. Let's say the house does not meet the definition of vacant, but you turned the heating off to secure money. Your damage will not be covered (house must be heated during the usual heating available). Let's say the house does not meet the definition of vacant, the heating has stayed on, almost all insurers would want you (or a competent person) to enter the dwelling daily to ensure that heating was being maintained. If this wasn't done, your ruin MAY not be covered. You will have to check your policy to confirm the third one. If all of the above has been done, then you are required to take whatever action required to obstruct further damage, however you must wait for the adjuster to contact you before you can proceed with repairs. There is nothing stopping you from getting estimates just away, but do not agree to anything until the adjuster contacts you.

Home owners insurance claim?

Q: Hi, had a certainly about a home owners insurance claim. My house was broken into today, stole my 56 in. tv, ps3, and about 10 ps3 games. Skint down the door and the door barely locks now. They also were obviously smoking cigarettes due to the fritter away holes in my new living room carpet. I bought the house about 7 months ago so I've never done this before, I comprehend I have to file a claim with my insurance company which is Grange, I believe we have a $500 deductible. Basically good wanting to know how long is it going to take to get money from the insurance company to fix my door and stuff. I was told from the cops that whatever everything is quality, they will just take $500 off of that or something. And another question- how do they know how much these things cost? I paid $2100 for my tv and I deem $400 for his ps3 and $65 for each game they stole. Am I going to get anthing near that amount or are they prevalent to try to cut me a $1500 check? Sorry so many questions just a lot to take in, and confused.
Thanks for all the answers, they have been very reassuring. But even though it was a break in my insurance is still going to go up no matter what? And why should I change the actual locks on all my doors and windows? And one more, I filed my claim today and how extended does it usually take to get my money so I can get my new stuff and fix my carpet and door?
